If Muni service were disrupted, but by protestors instead of by the usual hilarity, would you notice?
Tomorrow morning might just be your chance to find out.
Protestors are organizing a Muni Shutdown, slated to begin tomorrow morning at 6am, in honor of the 1-year anniversary of the death of Kenneth Harding Jr. Harding, who was 19 years old, was killed near the intersection of Third Street and Oakdale Avenue in the Bayview, as police were conducting a routine Muni fare inspection.
There is confusion over exactly how Harding was killed. Originally, police claimed that they had shot and killed Harding after he fired a shot at officers while evading fare inspection. After an autopsy was conducted, however, police retracted that claim, noting that the bullet found inside Harding did not match those used by police, indicating that Harding may have shot himself. However, no gun was found on him.
Twelve days after Harding’s death, police announced that they had recovered a gun that matched the bullet that killed Harding, though they would not say where they found it. By that point, video of Harding’s death, in which SFPD officers seemingly stand around near Harding as he slowly bleeds to death, had already circulated on the internet. Outrage over the SFPD’s handling of the situation quickly spread, and has continued to this day.
Thus, tomorrow’s protest.
Organizers have chosen 6am at the intersection of Market and 14th as the starting point of the shutdown, though it’s unclear what happens from there. Also unclear is whether they’re only targeting Muni bus line service, or light rail as well.
Regardless, should make for an interesting scene near the Safeway tomorrow morning. We shall see…
