On Saturday, a section of the “Love in the Lower Haight” mural at Haight and Laguna was updated with an entirely new piece of interactive art.

The black-and-white piece features the phrase “GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN”, with a giant hand reaching down to a field of leaves. Passersby are encouraged to use chalk to write the name of someone or something “gone but not forgotten” inside the leaves.

This is the first in a planned series of murals by artist Jennifer Maria Harris, who explains on her website:

“The Wood and Water Art paintings will be done with chalk paint in different locations around San Francisco, and as each painting fades or is washed away, I will replace it with a new one.”

Just one year since it originally appeared, the Lower Haight mural has undergone many iterations, being updated, tagged, celebrated, defaced, cleaned, and now updated again.

The mural is a temporary project, and will continue to evolve until its ultimate demolition, along with the rest of the UC Berkeley Extension building, likely some time in the next year or two.
