The Examiner reports this morning that Hayes Valley Farm received notice that it will soon have to vacate its location to make way for a planned condo project.
Hayes Valley Farm opened in January 2010 on the block bounded by Laguna, Octavia, Fell and Oak. Until 1989, the lot was the site of the Central Freeway off-ramp, until damage sustained in the Loma Prieta earthquake led to the ramp’s demolition. A few years of inactivity later, the City decided to make the space available for a temporary green transformation.
Co-Director Jay Rosenberg told the Examiner that they always knew the Farm would only exist for “two to five years.” Now it’s looking more like two than five.
Though the condos are still in the early planning stages, according to a recent post on the Farm’s blog, they “may need to be off the site as early as February 2012.”
Fortunately, this won’t be the end of the Farm. Rosenberg says they’re looking at other sites around the city, and should decide on a new location within a few weeks.
We’ll keep you posted.
