There is huge, world-altering news this morning, folks.

This definitely isn’t it.

Instead, here’s a little story about new left-turn traffic signals that have popped up at the corner of Fell and Scott Streets!

Haighteration reader Josh K., who is basically establishing himself as our bike safety guru, sends us the above photo of the new, not-quite-operational signals.

As reported by Streetsblog, the SFMTA recently installed the new lights as part of a larger effort to make riding the Wiggle safer.

With a reported increase in Wiggle ridership of 84.7% in recent years according to BIKE NOPA, the SFMTA has taken various steps to make the route more bike-friendly, including creating a left-turn bike lane on Scott in early 2010. The bike lane was intended to make the turn onto Fell safer and easier. But with only a 30-second window to make the turn (or less, depending on oncoming traffic), many cyclists are still resorting to risky maneuvers to make the turn in time.

Now, with the new turn signals, cyclists (and cars) traveling north on Scott Street will have dedicated time to make the left turn onto Fell Street.

According to Streetsblog, the signals should go live in the next couple of weeks. And with this victory, our world will become just a little bit safer.
