Let’s face it — you can’t have “Lower Haight” without “Earth.”
Well, you could, but it would be “Lowhig,” which would be meaningless.
Non-sequiturs aside, what do we do with Lower Haight news stories that aren’t quite right for the front page? Do we throw them away? Heck no, that would be wasteful.
Instead, in the spirit of sustainability, we give these precious news stories new life, via the compost bin that is… Lower Haight Leftovers!
- From Sunday until Friday (which is Arbor Day), Hayes Valley Farm will be celebrating Earth Week with free activities, classes, and workshops, plus music, potlucks, and parties. Check their website for the full schedule.
- Attention hockey fans: Mad Dog in the Fog & Kezar Pub have some tickets available for tomorrow night’s Sharks vs Kings Game 5 at the Shark Tank. The Sharks are up 3-1, so this could be the clincher that sends them to the semifinals. No word on price, but the ticket package includes a ride on a luxury bus (including beer, soda, and snacks), a ticket in a penthouse suite, two drinks, and a gourmet buffet served during the game. If interested, call the Kezar ASAP — (415) 386-9292.
- Real estate site Socketsite has an update on the spookiest, awesomest house in the neighborhood, the Nightingale House at 201 Buchanan. Turns out, the folks who bought the house last year for $1.5 million plan to do over $150,000 worth of renovations to the exterior alone, including removing a chimney, replacing all window sashes with exact replicas made out of African mahogany, and “recreat[ing] missing balconies by reverse engineering from [a] photograph.” The renovation period is expected to last 10 years. (No word on plans for the interior.)
- A year after opening their first location at Baker and McAllister, the folks behind Chile Pies (& Ice Cream) have announced their plans to open a second location. And, like the original, it will be located just a tantalizingly short walk from the Lower Haight — on Church Street at 15th, in the previous home of No-Name Sushi. It’s scheduled to open mid-June. Tablehopper has the scoop.
- In addition to being Earth Day, today is also Good Friday! Two Jacks (401 Haight Street) will be observing the meatless holy day with a Good Friday Fish Fry tonight. There’ll be $2 drink specials and live music from 7-9pm. Check out the restaurant’s Facebook page, or you can now follow them on Twitter, for more details.
- Tomorrow, Lower Haters hosts a Trunk Show Sale featuring items from some of their favorite designers, plus food from TakoYaki SF and Lower Haters-curated music. The fun goes down from noon to 5pm on Saturday, at 597 Haight Street.
- Finally, a new piece of street art went up on the Oak Street side of Cafe Divis this week:
While there was some Twitter speculation that the style and content looked fairly Banksy-like, the art was actually created by an artist named Eddie Colla. Haighteration reader Tony A. sends us these photos of the artist in action:
