Lower Haight Leftovers: 3/18 Edition

We’ve got some wandering newlyweds, European muralists, an ice cream auction for Japan, and much more — all in this week’s leftovers!

  • On Wednesday night, the Board of Appeals denied a neighbor’s attempt to prevent Chase Bank from building a branch on the 400 block of Divisadero.

In a 7.5-hour meeting, which SFist’s Andrew Dalton describes as “miserable,” a good number of speakers from both sides of the issue (including a rep from Chase) made their cases. There were two main issues at hand — whether SF’s formula retail law, which limits the number of stores a chain can have in San Francisco to eleven, applies to banks, and whether the size of Chase’s proposed branch would exceed the threshhold above which a conditional use hearing would be required.

Apparently, the Board believed the answers were no and no. Every present member except one voted in Chase’s favor. So, looks like this thing’s gonna move forward, barring other legal action or further appeals.

  • Tonight, Lower Haters presents The Massive Nuts Show featuring Italian artist Galo, who was the first artist ever to be shown at Lower Haters. Also part of the show are fellow European street artists 2501 and Ottograph. The three all specialize in large-scale mural works, so expect big things. That’s Lower Haters, 597 Haight, tonight from 7pm to 10pm.
  • The Harvey Milk Photo Center, which we declared secretly awesome back in June, is now open for spring registration. HMPC offers more than 25 traditional and digital classes and workshops with prices ranging from $50 to $100, plus memberships with rates for teens, adults, and seniors. Check them out at 50 Scott Street, or visit their website for more information.
  • Want to live in the newly-purple Theatre Lofts building at 560 Haight Street? Here’s your chance.
  • Tonight at Duboce Park Cafe, catch a free performance by local indie folk trio Rin Tin Tiger, along with Danger Babes, Girl Named T, Mr. Andrew, and Brian Belknap. The fun starts at 7pm. And did we mention it’s free?
  • Three Twins had massive success with the Pliny the Elder flavor they developed for our Birthday Bash on Tuesday. (We can verify — as guest-scoopers in the 8pm hour, we could barely keep up with the steady stream of Pliny-seekers.)

Now, they reveal via tweet that they’re going to create one more batch of the ice cream, which they’ll auction off to benefit Japan relief efforts. We’ll keep you posted on this one.

  • Relatedly, thanks to everyone who participated in our ‘Hood-wide Birthday Bash on Tuesday, including both the local businesses who offered up discounts and the readers who braved the rain to enjoy some quality time in the neighborhood. We hope to throw similar events again in the future — but hopefully with more cooperative weather.
  • And finally, reader Lynn F. sends us this photo she took on Monday of an unidentified couple who had just gotten married at City Hall, and were “strolling lower haight as part of their celebration.” (If anyone can identify these two, let us know!)

Anything we missed this week? Let’s hear it. tips [at] haighteration {{dot}} com.
