Here are a few Lower Haight news stories that didn’t make the front page this week!
- On Sunday afternoon we got a tip from a reader about an early-morning mugging involving a screaming woman at Haight and Scott, though without more details, we didn’t have much to report.
Well, now we know what happened.
As SF Weekly tells it, a woman had fallen asleep while taking a taxi home at around 5:15am Sunday morning. When the cab arrived at her home at Haight and Scott, the woman awoke to find the driver demanding $9 for the ride. However, the woman claimed the ride should only cost $6.50, and only had that much on her. She told the driver she would go inside her home to get more money, but the cabbie didn’t believe her. When she exited the cab, he “jumped out of the taxi, pushed her to the ground, beat her up, and took her wallet and keys.”
As far as we’re aware, no arrests have been made at this point.
- In other weird crime news, remember a couple of weeks ago, when an Upper Haight market employee shot a customer, possibly over an overweight semi-chihuahua named Gizmo? Well, in a bizarre development, Gizmo sadly met his end on Friday, struck by a car near Haight and Masonic, the same general area where his owner was shot.
- Tomorrow (Saturday), from 5-8pm, stop by Aline’s Closet at the corner of Waller and Pierce as they celebrate the launch of their newest collection. There’ll be a video projection, a red velvet carpet, champagne, and 20% off, plus the unveiling of a shoe workshop in the boutique’s basement. Get more info over on their Facebook page.
- Also tomorrow (Saturday), don’t miss the final night of the Noise Pop-Up Shop at 248 Fillmore. Amoeba Music curates an art show featuring works from over 20 local artists. The event is free, and runs from 6-10pm.
- And when Noise Pop exits the 248 Fillmore space, the Fecal Face Dot Gallery will be moving in — permanently. The well-known, provocatively-named gallery, currently housed at 66 Gough, will officially relocate to the Fillmore space on Friday, March 11th with the opening of a new show, West, Wester, Westest Part 2, featuring works by Chicago-area artists. We’ll remind you when the date draws closer, of course.
- Need rubbers? (Boots, that is…) Well, Swedish shoemakers Tretorn are driving around SF from now until May selling their stylish and durable gear. Apparently they’ll be stopping by the Noise Pop-Up Shop on Sunday, which is a little confusing since the shop supposedly closes on Saturday. So, the “Wellie Wagon” may or may not be swinging through the neighborhood this weekend — if you spot it, let us know!
Update 9:35am: The good folks at Noise Pop have clarified for us – the Wellie Wagon will be appearing Sunday at their Culture Club event at Public Works, which is called Pop ‘n’ Shop — not at the Pop-Up Shop on Fillmore. Bummer! Sorry for the confusion…
- A Lower Haight band named Hungry Hungry Ghost has just lost its drummer, and is now looking for a replacement. If you’re a local drummer willing to practice twice a week and eventually go on tour and record, drop them a line!
- And finally, the Theatre Lofts building at 560 Haight was repainted from a minty green to an eggplanty purple this week.
