Last night, the Oak Gourmet convenience store at the corner of Oak and Buchanan was robbed at gunpoint.
A suspect, who police describe as a black man around 30 years in age, entered the store at 497 Oak Street around 10:50pm. He pointed a gun at the store’s owner and demanded money, cigarettes, and a cell phone. The owner gave these items to the suspect, after which the suspect fired one shot at the owner, but missed. The suspect then fled the scene.
As of this morning, the suspect has not been apprehended. Police say their Criminal Investigations Unit (C.I.U.) is currently investigating the case.
Haighteration reader Alex W. tipped us to the robbery via email:
I was out walking my dog and heard the single gunshot (i thought at first it was a car backfiring). no one was hurt but the man working the counter chased his assailant and was understandably upset. I stopped in right after it happened when I saw the owner frantic on the telephone and was told that a man with a gun had robbed them and fled up Buchanan and down an alley or side street b/t Buchanan and Page. There was a witness present who stayed to give a description of the man and the cops were on scene. I’m sad to hear of this in such close proximity to this week’s other violence. The owners of Oak Gourmet are very nice people and its saddening to hear that this happened to them. Thankfully no one was hurt.
