If you thought, as we did, that there wouldn’t be much Lower Haight news to report in the waning days of 2010, think again!

Today we receive word that Bistro St. Germain (518 Haight St.) has quietly and quickly closed for good.

An anonymous tipster, who claims to be taking over the space, writes us with news of the closure. Via email:

A young couple with more than 12 years of cooking experience in the city will be taking over the space and creating an American food menu that is sure to enthuse the neighbors. More details to come soon about name, menu, etc.

The email is signed, “Your new lower haight neighbor.”

While this may sound cryptic, it corroborates with some potentially tasty rumors we heard last week. It’s also supported by the account of one unlucky Yelp commenter, who arrived at the restaurant two nights ago with a 16-person dinner reservation, only to find the bistro out of business.

We’re working to get more details from the various parties involved, and will of course keep you updated!
